Health Outlines: Sleep Apnea

From

Are you aware of the risks associated with sleep apnea and what you can do to help prevent it or have it treated? If you are suffering from sleep apnea, it is important to visit your dentist as soon as possible. Sleep apnea is a condition in which your breathing is interrupted while you sleep. If for any reason you feel tired in the morning, or repeatedly wake up during the night, visit your dentist to determine if you are suffering from sleep apnea.

Often times, individuals may be more likely to suffer from sleep apnea if they are over 40, are, overweight, or are males. Other risk factors for for sleep apnea include:

large tonsils
a large tongue
a small jaw in relation to your face
a family history of sleep apnea
a deviated septum
frequent nasal obstructions
a blocked airway due to sleeping methods
allergies or sinus problems

If left untreated, sleep apnea can lead to strokes, heart attacks or even heart failure. Your dentist may suggest changing your sleeping position, an oral appliance, or a CPAP machine. In severe cases, surgery may be necessary.
